Beautiful old restored theater in the city hall building downtown. Built in the mid-1800s and the oldest theater in North Carolina. Offerings include independent films, locally-produced stage plays and musicals, nationally-known musical acts as well.
Beautiful theater, but the balcony seats have posts that obscure the view of the stage. If you have to pay extra for a seat, you should have a better view. The production was flawless. We were very happy with Young Frankenstein!
Despite being a “jewel” of a theater, the facility is old, tired, and smells of must. I was unfortunate enough to be seated in the rear orchestra where sight lines are obstructed by the overhanging balcony, cutting off half of the proscenium. The production of South Pacific I saw was a real disappointment. Though one must acknowledge it as community theater, the acting was atrocious, the singing inconsistent, and the orchestra non-existent. The subtleties and nuances of the piece were completely lost and it was devoid of all charm.
Went to see the 8th annual Womanless beauty pageant. Seen this show 2years ago and loved them both times I saw them. Very funny and I would go a 3rd time. The hall is beautiful and historical.
Do NOT get tickets on the top balcony. I am not exaggerating when I say that you will not be able to see the stage from almost any seat up top. At the very best top seats, you'll be able to see like 25% of stage. The giant solid wood banister blocks everything. We went for a comedy show, and couldn't even see the comedians. Absolutely disappointed and wasted money. They should be ashamed to sell those seats to anyone. Please see the below pictures of our "view."
